Scanning Elite Swimmers
3D body scanning for performance swimwear development
One of the most significant developments in the application of 3D scanning technology is its ability to allow designers and engineers to capture highly accurate digital models of the human body and its movements. In the development of sports clothing specifically for elite swimmers, this process helps optimise fit, comfort, and performance. Overall, 3D scanning enhances product performance by reducing reliance on generic sizing assumptions, accelerating design iterations, and enabling data-driven decisions about materials, shape, and ergonomics in swimwear and accessories.
Over the years, we have been involved in a number of aquatic development projects, most recently with Adidas AG, 3D scanning hundreds of elite athletes and creating statistical datasets that have enabled manufacturers to design swimming caps and goggles that conform more precisely to real head geometries, reducing drag and preventing water ingress. These multiple head scans informed size ranges and adaptive shapes that accommodate variation in head size and hair volume. By mapping facial anatomy around the eyes and brow, we ensured goggles fitted better across different face shapes, improving comfort and reducing leakage.
Ultimately, 3D scanning enables a shift from approximation to precision. For competitive swim brands, this means products that fit better, perform more consistently, and are developed faster; all grounded in measurable anatomical data rather than assumption.
