Merging 3D scan data with fashion photography and film

Art & FashionFashion Photography & Film

One of our longest and most challenging collaborations has been with the Norway-born, London-based fashion photographer and filmmaker Sølve Sundsbø, who has long pushed the visual language of fashion into otherworldly territory. His reputation rests not only on stylistic versatility but also on an open-minded embrace of new technologies alongside more traditional techniques.

For Sølve, developments in camera systems and volumetric 3D scanning represent a genuine turning point. “I’ve always been curious how things look in a very different medium than photography,” he has said, reflecting upon a career defined by experimentation. As he told Vogue Italia in 2013, “My job as a photographer is to manipulate reality in order to tell what I want.”

Over the years, we have worked closely with Sølve to develop a unique workflow that merges 3D scan data with his 2D photography and 4D videography. Using our Artec handheld scanners, we capture the model’s form with precision, enabling Sølve to layer his 2D imagery with a perfectly rendered 3D model. Combining these different datasets allows distortion and surreal effects to be introduced seamlessly into both images and film.

On other projects, we have used photogrammetry to capture objects, props and even delicate flowers that have taken centre stage in the creative process for numerous haute couture and cosmetic editorials and advertising campaigns.
