Extra Ordinary

Bringing a haunted castle to life

Film, TV & CommercialsVFX3D Reality Capture

A witty, charming genre mash-up, Extra Ordinary is a sly, sharply underplayed fantasy comedy that balances the absurd with the genuinely macabre and that deserves to find an audience in this world or the next. At its centre is Rose, a sweet but reluctant psychic driving instructor who begrudgingly uses her otherworldly gifts to help a lonely man save his daughter from a washed-up rock star plotting a Satanic sacrifice to revive his career. What sets the film apart is its tone: warm, self-aware, and consistently funny without sacrificing its oddball edge. The script playfully leans into genre conventions while the cast fully embraces the surreal, creating characters that are instantly lovable and moments that are both ridiculous and oddly touching.

Kittiwake Digital were asked to provide 3D scanning services at one of the key locations featured in the film. Located near Tullamore in County Offaly, Charleville Castle is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest examples of neo-Gothic architecture. Designed by Francis Johnston for Charles William Bury, the Earl of Charleville, construction began in 1798 and took 14 years to complete. The castle features grand twin staircases and richly detailed interiors, including a William Morris designed dining room ceiling that still survives today. It also carries a reputation as one of Europe’s most haunted sites, most notably linked to the ghost of a young girl named Harriet, said to have died after falling from the staircase.

Using laser scanners and digital cameras we employed our hybrid scanning methodology to create fully textured 3D models of a number of the castle’s interior spaces used in the film. The scene of Satanic rituals in a room designed by William Morris was, admittedly, new territory for us. But we emerged unscathed and with all our technology intact, despite the attention of a black cat wandering through the castle.
